Founded in 1984, the Bear River Economic Development Society (BREDS) is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving one of Bear River, Nova Scotia's most distinctive landmarks—a historic, community-owned stilt building.

For more than 40 years, BREDS has cared for this unique building while ensuring it continues to serve the community in meaningful ways. Our work supports rural economic resilience by providing affordable housing, creating space for locally owned businesses, and maintaining access to essential services.

Our priorities include: preserving this historic community asset for future generations, providing safe, affordable housing, supporting local businesses that offer food, services, and opportunities for community connection and maintaining an inclusive, welcoming hub for residents and visitors alike, with a focus on serving seniors and low-income community members.

Today, the building is home to two affordable housing units, a community grocery co-op featuring local produce, a barber shop, the Bear River Visitor Information Centre, and the village's only restaurant. Together, these tenants help make the building a vibrant centre of everyday life in Bear River.
